Rod Wallace claimed his eighth goal of the season to put Leeds back on the winning trail at White Hart Lane where Spurs manager Gerry Francis was left in even deeper despair over another dismal display by his team.
Wallace's 19th-minute strike should have been the first of many by George Graham's side, who dominated the first half and then comfortably contained Tottenham's frantic recovery effort after the interval.
Leeds keeper Nigel Martyn had to make a fine save to prevent an equaliser from a Sol Campbell header following David Ginola's free kick.
But with an ounce of luck Wallace could have finished with a hat-trick for Leeds and Spurs goal keeper Ian Walker distinguished himself with other saves from Bruno Ribeiro and David Hopkin.
And at the end frustrated Spurs fans vented familiar derision against Francis as Spurs extended their depressing run of just one win in the last nine Premiership games.
Rod Wallace shot slick Leeds United into a 19th-minute lead at White Hart Lane as George Graham's side made Tottenham look a ragged, distinct second best in their Premiership clash.
Tottenham goalkeeper Ian Walker pulled off a superb 10th minute save to defy David Hopkin as Leeds forced the better chances in a tight opening spell at White Hart Lane.
Rod Wallace's shot seemed to take a deflection off Gary Mabbutt in the second minute but referee Keith Burge ruled a goal kick.
Spurs had three centre-backs, dropping Ramon Vega and Steve Carr after last week's defeat at Southampton but their defence opened invitingly in the 10th minute when the returning John Scales tried to find team-mate Justin Edinburgh with a header and only succeeded in setting up Hopkin, who saw his firm shot turned away at full stretch by the diving Walker.
Two minutes later Spurs had their first real chance when Frenchman David Ginola shrugged off the attention of his marker Alf-Inge Haaland and released Ruel Fox, who fired over the bar on the run from David Robertson's challenge.
But Spurs were soon in trouble at the back again when Sol Campbell had to block Harry Kewell's close-range shot from a return ball by Wallace.
Then on the quarter hour Wallace failed to connect in front of an empty goal from Hopkins' cross after Scales had completely missed his attempt at the clearance.
It was no surprise then when Wallace drove Leeds into a 19thminute lead with his eighth goal of the season.
